HANDHOLDER MITTEN
Designed by Nancy Hill

MATERIALS:
Approx. 200 yds of heavy worsted weight yarn. The shop example uses 1 strand of Jo Sharp (2 skeins) and 1 strand Garnstudio Silk Tweed (1 skein).
Other options: Mission Falls 1824 Wool, Plymouth Galway, Noro Silk Garden, or Tahki Donegal Tweed. Needles: size 6 and 7 double-pointed needles (dpn's), or size needed to make gauge, and 16" circular needle in larger size needles.
Also needed: tapestry needle, stitch holders.
Gauge: 18 sts = 4" over St st.
NOTE #1: If you wish to make matching single mittens for the other hands, additional yarn will be needed, as well as any basic mitten pattern, such as Ann Norling's.
NOTE #2: Mitten is sized for average adult hands. Each cuff is knit separately in the round, then joined and finished together all in the round.

INSTRUCTIONS:

CUFF: With smaller dpn's, cast on 32 sts, join and work in K2, P2 rib for 3" or desired length of cuff. Change to larger dpn's and *begin st st (which means knitting every row when knitting in the round), increasing 3 sts evenly around (35 sts). Work 2 rounds even*. Repeat between *'s twice more (9 rounds, 41 sts). Break yarn, leaving a 20" tail. Put cuff on st holder. Work second cuff as above, but DO NOT BREAK YARN.
JOINING: With 16" circ needle, begin knitting at beginning of round on 1st cuff with yarn still joined to 2nd cuff. Work 39 sts - put last 2 sts on dpn. Put 1st 2 sts of 2nd cuff on another dpn. Continue knitting with 16" circ needle on 2nd cuff - it will be tight! 78 sts. Increase one st at each join for a total of 80 sts. Pause circular knitting and do 3-needle bind off on 2 sts of each cuff in center on dpn's with 20" tail. Resume working on 16" circ needle for 4" from join.
TIP SHAPING: Switch to larger dpn's when necessary. K6, K2tog around. K one round. K5, K2tog around. K one round. K4, K2tog around. K one round. K3, K2tog around. K one round. K2, K2tog around. K one round. K2tog around. Break yarn, leaving 10" tail. Draw through sts and weave in ends.
