THE "ANYBODY COULD MAKE THIS" HAT PATTERN
Designed by Nancy Hill

MATERIALS:
Any yarn to knit to gauge. Needles: 16" circular needles in size indicated on yarn ball, set of double-pointed needles in same size. Also needed: tapestry needle, ring markers. Gauge: 3, 4, or 5 sts = 1" (see below). NOTE #1: There are two sizes given, 20" (child) and 22" (adult), in each of 3 gauges.

INSTRUCTIONS:

5 sts per inch
On 16" circ. needles, cast on 100 (110) sts. Join being careful not to twist. Knit until piece measures 6 (7)". Next row: Dec 4 (2) sts evenly around. The number of sts on the needle will be a multiple of 8.
**Top decreases:
Round (rnd) 1: (K6, K2tog) around
Rnd 2 and all even rounds: knit
Rnd 3: (K5, K2tog) around
Rnd 5: (K4, K2tog) around - it is about on this round that you will need to switch to double pointed needles to prevent your sts from stretching too much.
Rnd 7: (K3, K2tog) around
Rnd 9: (K2, K2tog) around
Rnd 11: (K1, K2tog) around
Rnd 13: K2tog around
Cut length of yarn (10" or so) and draw through remaining sts with tapestry needle. Weave in ends.

4 sts per inch
With 16" circ. needles, cast on 80 (88) sts. Join being careful not to twist. Knit until piece measures 6 (7)". Go to ** and work top decreases and finish hat.

3 sts per inch
With 16" circ. needles, cast on 60 (66) sts. Join being careful not to twist. Knit until piece measures 6 (7)". Next row: decrease 4 (2) sts evenly around hat. The number of sts on the needle will be a multiple of 8. Go to ** and work top decreases and finish hat.
