Ruffled boa or scarf

By Andrea Jones

Note: Two patterns are included here. The boa is a heavily ruffled, long accessory. The scarf is wider and less ruffled. Both are very easy, but will take a little perseverance as the rows will take a little while to knit.

The first set of numbers if for the boa; the second set for the scarf. Where one number is given, it applies to both.

Materials

Boa

Scarf

  • 220 yds worsted weight mohair (MC)
  • 3 balls of GGH/Muench Soft Kid
  • 80 yds of contrast texture or color yarn (CC)
  • 1 ball Rowan Kid Silk Haze in contrasting but coordinating color
  • Denise interchangeable needle set with 60-inch cable (US 10) or any size 10
    60-inch circular needle
  • Circular needles: Size 8, 60 inch
  • Crochet hook size H
  • Crochet hook size H
  • About 10 yards smooth contrast yarn for casting on
  • About 10 yards smooth contrast yarn for casting on

Directions

With crochet hook and smooth contrast yarn, chain 125 sts. (I usually chain many more than I need for more ease in starting.) Using the appropriate needle for your project, pick up 125 sts in the back “hump” of each chain. (The back hump is found behind what looks like a “v” on the crochet chain.  Be careful just to pick up in the hump and try not to split the yarn.)

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: K1, inc in every st by knitting into the front and back of each st, end with K1.

Row 3: Knit /(K 3 rows)

Row 4: K1,*YO, K1. Rep from * across row.

Row 5: Knit/(K 3 rows)

Row 6: K1,*YO, K2. Rep across row, end with a K1.

Row 7: Knit/(K 4 rows)

Row 8: K2,*YO, K3 across row, end with a K2.

Row 9: Knit/(K 2 rows)

Row 10: K1,*YO, K2 across row, end K1 /(Bind off scarf with doubled strand of contrast yarn.)

Row 11: (Boa only) Knit

Row 12: Bind off boa in contrast yarn

Now, pluck out your cast-on row. Begin at the end loop where you finished off the chain and slowly unpluck the sts. As you do this, load them onto your knitting needle. It should unzip easily. You will have 125 sts. Repeat Rows 1-12 as for the first side.
